Motorists could have their records wiped clean if they steer clear of committing further road offences for 12 months, under a new safety drive rolled out by police in Dubai.
Dubai Police launched the "Exemplary Driver" scheme to reward safe driving and to encourage people to watch their speed and take extra care when behind the wheel.
The campaign was unveiled by Major General Abdullah Khalifa Al Marri, commander-in-chief of Dubai Police, at the force's headquarters on Wednesday.
It is being introduced under a directive from Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai.
“I hope that this initiative will contribute to protecting the lives of road users, to making Dubai roads free of accidents and to achieve satisfaction and happiness of community members, which is the strategic objective for the government and for Dubai Police,” said Maj Gen Al Marri.
He said the discount is being offered to reduce the financial burden on motorists and also encourage them to adhere to traffic regulations.
Maj Gen Al Marri said that the one-year initiative could be extended if it is a success.
Motorists who maintain a clean record for 12 months will have 100 per cent of their fines cleared. Those who drive for nine months without picking up further penalties will have their fines cut by 75 per cent.
Driver who maintain a clean record for six months will have their existing fines cut by 50 per cent.
Motorists who maintain a clean traffic record for three months will benefit from a 25 per cent cut of their traffic fines.
The scheme covers only traffic offences committed in Dubai and does not include people who are based outside of the Emirate for a period of three months or more.
Major General Mohammed Saif Al Zafin, assistant commander-in-chief of Dubai Police's operations and chairman of the federal traffic council, said that the initiative does not apply to vehicles registered to private companies, rentals, and public or private transport companies.
