SHARJAH // Taxi tariffs will be going up for the second time this year in Sharjah and a minimum fare will be introduced, transportation officials have announced. Taxis will charge Dh1 for every 620 metres from Dh1 every 650 metres from September 1, said Abdullah al Zari, the director of Sharjah Transport, on Sunday. The minimum tariff for a trip within the emirate would be Dh10, he said, though taxi meters will still start from Dh3.50 during the day and Dh4 at night. The increases came after several requests from taxi companies to cope with the recent increases in fuel prices, Mr al Zari added. It is the second time this year that fares have increased following a rise in February.
"The decision to increase the prices was taken after a thorough study and takes into account the interest of franchised companies and the public," Mr al Zari said. "We want the franchised companies to continue offering good services to the public." ykakande@thenational.ae
