Motorists who drive at 60 kph over the speed limit will face a fine of Dh1,000, have their vehicles impounded for one month, or pay an impound fee of Dh3,000, and receive 12 demerit points on their licence, said Colonel Shawaf Abdul Rahman, head of Sharjah Traffic Department.
People driving in excess of 200 kph will face the same penalties except they will not have the option to pay to take their cars from impound lot, Col Shawaf said.
He noted that the "fatality-free road" campaign found 40 per cent of motorists caught speeding were driving over 200 kph. The campaign was launched earlier this month to curb accidents and fatalities as result of speeding, reported Al Ittihad, the Arabic language sister paper of The National.
Mobile radars have also been increased to detect speeding on motorways including on Khalifa bin Zayed road, Maliha Al Madam road and Nazwa road and traffic patrols have been stepped up to catch offenders, said Col Shawaf.
