Commuters between Dubai and Sharjah faced long delays on Sunday after four of six lanes of a busy motorway were flooded.

Heavy rain caused waterlogging on Al Ittihad Road, resulting in a partial road closure and causing a bottleneck between the two emirates.

The congestion is expected to continue throughout the evening.

Dubai Police said traffic on Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road would be heavier than usual towards Sharjah on Sunday due to “heavy pools of water”.

Motorists were advised to be prepared for delays on the E11, Al Ittihad Road and in Sharjah because of the weather conditions.

The ferry between Dubai and Sharjah was also hit by the rain, with the Roads and Transport Authority  announcing it was suspending the service between the emirates.

Earlier, the National Centre of Meteorology issued a severe weather warning with a red notice for residents to be “extremely vigilant due to hazardous weather events of exceptional severity forecast”.
