DUBAI// One person was killed and four were seriously injured, including a traffic officer on duty, in four incidents on Dubai roads yesterday.
A 25-year-old man, KHG, from an unnamed Arab country, died after losing control of his vehicle at the Al Khawaneej roundabout at around 1am. Police said he was speeding. His passenger was seriously injured.
A traffic officer was seriously injured when the driver of a 4x4 on Emirates Road, who police said was speeding and not being sufficiently cautious of the foggy conditions, hit a police vehicle, also early in the morning.
The third incident occurred on Academic City Road, when a speeding motorist hit another car at a crossing. The impact caused the second vehicle to catch fire and the driver, a woman, was taken to hospital with serious injuries.
In the fourth incident, a man from an unnamed Asian country was seriously injured when a car ran over him on Abu Al Hail street.
Despite yesterday's carnage, statistics released this summer by the Ministry of Interior showed that Dubai's roads are becoming less perilous.
In the first six months of this year, the number of accidents in the emirate dropped to 1,358 from 1,915 in the same period a year earlier.
