A new two-lane flyover opened on Saturday to ease traffic in a heavily congested Dubai suburb.

The interchange on Al Awir Road is intended to improve access in and around International City, the large desert community located between Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road and Emirates Road.

The flyover will mean up to 1,000 vehicles an hour will avoid having to make u-turns or queue at signal lights to access International City.

“The opening of Al Awir Road Improvement Project (Phase I) will contribute to the smooth flow of traffic from International City heading to Downtown Dubai," said Mattar Al Tayer, director-general of the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA).

"It included the construction of a bridge with an estimated capacity of 1000 vehicles per hour, which will ease the traffic pressure at the junction of Al Awir and Sheikh Zayed bin Hamdan Al Nahyan Streets. It will be easy for motorists coming from Hatta to access the Dragon Mart and the International City via Al Awir Road."

Further planned works include upgrading the Al Manama-Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road intersection, and widening the flyover passing over Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road from three to four lanes in each direction.
