Hundreds of environmentally-friendly vehicles are to join Dubai's taxi fleet.
The 370 hybrid cars are part of a 900-strong batch of taxis ordered by the Roads and Transport Authority.
The new vehicles will include Toyota Camrys, Lexus, Hyundai Sonatas and Nissan Altimas.
Mattar Al Tayer, director general of the RTA, said the procurement of new vehicles will improve passenger services.
“It enables the offering of unique and exclusive taxi services, to meet the growing public demand and enhance the level of service to achieve higher levels of customer happiness,” said Mr Al Tayer.
"The move is also part of RTA’s commitment to curbing the carbon footprint of taxis by 2 per cent as required by the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy and the Green Economy drive."
In May, it was announced that surveillance cameras were fitted to 6,500 taxis in Dubai and it is believed that more than 10,000 cabs in the city will be fitted with cameras by the end of the year.
