Five, including baby, killed in late-night Dubai crash

Five people were killed in a road crash in Dubai on Thursday night after a car stopped to fix a burst tyre.

DUBAI // Five people including a baby have been killed in a crash on Sheikh Zayed Road.

The tragedy happened after a burst tyre forced a car to stop in the middle of the road, and another vehicle smashed into it.

The accident took place just before 10pm on Thursday.

"Instead of stopping at the side of the road, the car stopped in the middle of the road," said Lt Imran Al Hamadi, of Dubai Traffic Police.

The crash occurred by bridge number seven, close to Jebel Ali.

All lanes of traffic travelling towards Abu Dhabi were blocked by ambulances, police cars and fire engines.

The car with tyre trouble, a Ford Explorer, was struck by a Toyota Yaris. Three people died immediately, including a nine-month-old baby who was with his mother and father.

The other two victims were rushed to Rashid Hospital but died of their injuries.

The driver of the Ford, believed to be an Arab national, was taken into police custody and an investigation is ongoing.

"There is always prosecution proceedings where death is involved," Lt Al Hamadi said. "In a case like this, the driver would be held in custody for up to 48 hours."
