Extra lanes added to Sheikh Zayed Road

The Department of Transport said the expansion works will ensure smoother traffic flows.

ABU DHABI // Extra lanes have been added to Sheikh Zayed Road, more signals erected and an asphalt layer added to cater for more vehicles.

The work has been completed on the approach to Abu Dhabi after crossing Sheikh Zayed Bridge and is part of the Department of Transport’s first phase of traffic improvements in the area.

Lanes have been widened from three to four and two to three at some points and will ensure a smoother traffic flow, particularly at peak times.

The road is now fully operational and the department completed the project in about five days.

The project of widening Sheikh Zayed Road to boost traffic flows and increase capacity has three phases. The second and third phases are set to begin soon and will include widening the road close to the ministries complex near Al Maqta Bridge and at the entrance of the bridge from both sides.

Following the completion of phase one, the department said it is monitoring vehicle movement and will respond to any urgent issues.
