DUBAI // Buses in the emirate may soon be powered by natural gas instead of diesel fuel.

The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) are testing out Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), a fossil fuel substitute to petrol and diesel.

The RTA has converted three of its vehicles to be fuelled by CNG as a test, part of their drive to diversify the sources of energy used in mass transit.

Though CNG still releases greenhouse gases, it is a more environmentally clean alternative to other fossil fuels.

The RTA says using CNG will also save up to 70 per cent of the cost of using traditional fuels, and can increase the lifespan of the vehicle and minimise engine faults.
