Passengers took more than 165 million rides on Dubai public transport in the first half of this year, the Roads and Transport Authority said.

The RTA is aiming for public transport to account for 30 per cent of all journeys by 2030, to cut the use of private vehicles.

Mattar Al Tayer, executive director of the RTA, said latest figures showed efforts were succeeding.

“Residents and visitors to the emirate do grasp the benefits and advantages of using public transport,” Mr Al Mattar said.

“They include the psychological and physical relief of riders, reducing traffic accidents, cutting expenses on fuel and maintenance of private vehicles, and avoiding the hassles of finding parking space, which is becoming a challenge facing most advanced cities worldwide.”

There were more than 43.5 million journeys on the Dubai Metro's Red Line and 23.5 million on the Green Line.

The busiest stations were Deira City Centre, Burj Khalifa, Mall of the Emirates, Union, Burjuman, Al Rigga and Al Karama.

Public buses recorded more than 56.2 million journeys, up from 53.5 million in the same period last year. Abras accounted for more than 6.4 million trips.

The Dubai Taxi Corporation registered 35.4 million journeys.
