A Dubai Police trainer has won first place in the 100 kilometre Dubai 92 Cycle Challenge, beating more than 1,500 other men and women.

Samah Khaled, who holds more than 80 gold medals from championships worldwide, joined Dubai Police in February.

She represented the force in a recent challenge in Al Ain’s Jebel Hafeet, in which she also won first place. Following that victory, officers decided to form a women’s cycling team.

“Since that day it’s been all victories,” said Ibrahim Al Falamrzi, the team's manager.

Ms Khaled, 27, from Jordan, was named Arab Champion after participating in the Arab Games in Qatar in 2011.

During the same year she was also crowned the best Jordanian athlete. She has earned 28 cycling gold medals in the UAE alone.

She also represented Bahrain in their national team for two years. Now, there are plans to give her UAE citizenship so she can join the Emirates squad.

The Spinneys 100km cycle challenge took place on Friday. The race started in Dubai Autodrome, passed through Al Barsha and Al Khail road, and headed back to the autodrome for the finish.
