A vehicle crashed into a canal in a popular Dubai residential community on Tuesday night, with the driver fleeing afterwards, witnesses say.

They said fire engines and Dubai Police rushed to the scene in Dubai Sports City at about 9.20pm.

The car drove into the 1.2-kilometre canal that lines a popular retail promenade in the area, just behind the Canal Residence West complex.

One resident heard the crash before seeing the car floating down the shallow, 15-metre-wide canal.

According to witnesses, police were still at the scene around 10.30pm as crews worked to remove the car with a crane.

Bystanders said the driver fled the scene after the accident.

It was unclear what caused the incident – which at the time of publishing had not been confirmed by police – or if another vehicle was involved.

It was unknown if there were any casualties.
