A "Smart Driver" app to help reduce traffic accidents has been launched by Abu Dhabi Police.

The app, for iPhone and Android smartphones, will list drivers in their order of compliance with speed limits and use of phones while driving.

A model driver will be chosen every month and awarded Dh10,000, said Brig Gen Hussein Ahmed Al Harethi, director of the traffic and patrols directorate.

The first phase of the project will be officially activated next September. At the department's headquarters yesterday, Brig Gen Al Harethi said the scheme was new globally.

It registers all data in a confidential database for each driver. Information saved in the database is strictly for motivational purposes.
