Motorists who committed traffic offences in Abu Dhabi this year will have to pay only half the amount they owe, police said on Wednesday.

Drivers fined before December 22 are eligible for a 50 per cent discount if it is paid within three months. Police said they would also waive traffic points for the offending motorists. Ordinarily, drivers have their licences suspended and their car confiscated if they rack up 24 traffic points.

Police also launched an early fine payment discount scheme that allows motorists who pay within 60 days to be given a 35 per cent discount.

A 25 per cent discount will be applied to fines paid after 60 days up to a year. Any fines paid a year after the offence was registered must be paid in full.

On Wednesday, police said the discounts apply to all fines except for "serious violations". Traffic prosecution and Abu Dhabi courts have the discretion to exclude certain penalties from the discounts, police said.
