DUBAI // Three people will face charges in court over a fatal hit-and-run accident on the Dubai-Al Ain Road last month.
SM, a 24-year-old Emirati who lived in Al Ain, was stood on the hard shoulder while refuelling his car on October 24 when he was hit by a lorry. The man, who worked in the Armed Forces, was thrown about 20 metres before landing on the ground, according to prosecutors.
The Traffic Prosecution have referred the driver of the lorry, the 27-year-old Pakistani AH, to court on charges of causing death, damaging property and failing to stop after a fatal accident.
"He told prosecutors that he was tired and sleepy and therefore could not stop [before hitting the man]," said Salah Bu Farousha Al Falasi, the head of Traffic Prosecution. The owner of the vehicle, the 52-year-old Indian AM, has also been referred to court on the charge of withholding information about a crime.
Mr Al Falasi said that rather than inform authorities of the accident, the owner told the driver to take the car to a mechanic for repairs.
The mechanic, the 50-year-old Indian AF, was referred to court on a charge of fixing a vehicle without permission from the relevant authorities.
Police identified the driver by linking his vehicle to debris found at the scene. His vehicle was discovered in the Al Aweer Industrial Area.
