DUBAI// A dense blanket of fog engulfed parts of the country today reducing visibility to 50 metres in some areas.

Residents living around Sheikh Zayed Road, Jumeirah and Dubai Marina reported thick, low-hanging clouds that stretched for several kilometres until midday.

The capital was the most affected by the unstable weather, with poor visibility in the central and western regions. Visibility was as low as 50m in Liwa, with similar conditions near the Abu Dhabi Airport and Al Dafra Airport.

"The condition was bad over Abu Dhabi, while Dubai saw a little less fog today," said a weather forecaster at the National Centre of Meteorology and Seismology (NCMS).

"Central Abu Dhabi and Al Minhad had the worst visibility." The highways from Dubai to the capital and Abu Dhabi to Al Ain were also affected.

A spokeswoman from Abu Dhabi Airport said no flights were delayed or cancelled because of the fog today.

The forecaster from NCMS said there will be mist and mild fog on Saturday as well.
