In a survey of neighbourhoods across the UAE, Emirati artist Hussain AlMoosawi presents a series of images that bring into focus a subject one might typically pass by without a second glance: construction fences.
Residential structures in the UAE can be repetitive and drab, especially where the colour of their facades is concerned.
These uniform neighbourhoods emphasise the limits we wilfully impose on ourselves. They represent our tireless attempt to be the same; to play it safe and be “correct”.
This visual uniformity is wonderfully disrupted by an unexpected source of colour and geometry.
Breaking through the monotony, the high, panelled fences come in a variety of colours, representing an ephemeral intervention indicating the work in progress.
These fences teach us a lesson to break free from the norm: to be colourful, to try and set oneself apart, whether that makes us stand out or go unnoticed.
And in some sense, as we approach life with a curious mind we are permanently under construction.
