Dubai will this month play host to a festival that celebrates the sciences through the arts and popular culture.

The inaugural SciFest Dubai will feature an astronomy art exhibition, fashion show, music concert and performance poetry.

There will be science workshops, mad-science fun shows, a play, a murder mystery dinner and more – all dedicated to science.

“This science festival is unlike any other because it aims to include absolutely everyone – not just lovers of science, hence its tagline, ‘You don’t have to be a scientist to love science’,” said Rohan Roberts, the festival director.

“SciFest Dubai is a celebration of the sciences through the arts and popular culture. We’d like to bridge the gap that has formed between the arts and sciences – think of Leonardo da Vinci.

“The arts and sciences both involve creativity and imagination.”

Sponsored by Gems Education, the festival will be held from February 26 to March 1 at the Meydan Theatre.

Twelve speakers are scheduled to explain the wonders of science in an opening ceremony conference based on the theme “Intelligent Optimism”.

Led by chief guest Dr Abdulla Al Karam, chairman of the board of directors and director general of the Knowledge and Human Development Authority, it will feature five-minute presentations by international scientists and personalities.

While the events on February 27 will be reserved for school visits, the festival will open to the public February 28 to March 1.
