THANE, INDIA // Police in the city of Thane in India have taken to staging street plays to highlight the importance of road safety. Sudhir Dabhade, the deputy commissioner of police in charge of the traffic control branch, says that his department had organised 14 street plays during January. Seven actors will be involved in the 20-minute performances, which focus on the importance of following road rules and the often tragic consequences of breaking these rules. According to Dabhade, one of the biggest menaces on the roads of Thane is joyriders travelling at high speeds on motorcycles. "The riders feel that the cops are bent upon reducing their speed despite the fact that their vehicles are capable of being driven at the speed of 120 to 140 kilometres per hour," he says.
