DUBAI // Police say they will take "strict measures" against reckless drivers after catching a teenager performing stunts on the roads.
The Emirati man, 19, who was arrested last week, has been referred to public prosecution on a charge of endangering lives. His stunts, which included driving on two wheels, took place on University Road in Al Khawaneej and at Al Warqa roundabout. He was accompanied by three friends, police said.
The driver refused to stop for a police patrol and had to be tracked by an undercover police car before he was arrested.
Maj Gen Khamis Al Mazeina, the Dubai deputy police chief, said reckless driving "crossed a red line" and would not be tolerated.
"We have to take such strict measures against him to deter others from carrying out similar behaviour," he said.
However, Maj Gen Al Mazeina said reckless driving was not common among young drivers. "Such behaviour is not characteristic of our Emirati youth, but is limited to a few individuals who are ignorant of the traffic rules," he said.
In a separate announcement, Dubai Traffic Court said 591 drivers had their licences suspended in the first six months of the year for a variety of offences including drink driving and causing death by dangerous driving.
