FUJAIRAH // A 14-year-old Emirati girl is in a critical condition and suffering from several fractures after falling from the second floor of a school in Fujairah on Tuesday.

Alaa Al Abduli was sitting on a small wall between classrooms that had no fence when she lost her balance and fell to the ground at Lubaba bint Al Harith School, in Al Bidyah, near Fujairah city.

An ambulance and police patrols received a report about 9.30am and arrived to find the teenager unconscious. Alaa was taken to Khor Fakkan Hospital for treatment.

Her mother, Rose Safonova, said Alaa was scheduled for surgery on Wednesday.

“I was at home when the police called to inform me about the accident,” said Ms Safonova, 39.

“When I arrived to the hospital she was unconscious and the doctors told me that she had suffered multiple fractures in her arm, jaw, under her eye and on the back of her ear, with suspected internal bleeding.

“We tried to move her to a hospital in Abu Dhabi but we couldn’t due to her critical condition.” The operation was due to go ahead on Thursday, said the mother.

She said the Grade 9 pupil was taking in the sunshine when she lost balance and fell.

“She opened her eyes last night but only for a short time and today she was conscious. We are all worried about her and praying for her all the time,” Ms Safonova said.

Hussain Al Hammadi, Minister of Education, is following her treatment and said in a ministry tweet that the girl’s safety was a priority.

Police are still investigating the incident.

Alaa has one sister and five brothers. Her father died five years ago at the age of 33.

The Ministry of Education was not immediately available for comment.
