Taxi kills British sailor in Dubai accident

Dubai Traffic Police said the accident happened at 1am on Sheikh Zayed Road, close to Mazaya Centre.

DUBAI // A British Royal Navy sailor who helped to combat Somali piracy in the region was killed in Dubai after being hit by a taxi on Sunday.

The UK defence ministry said the serviceman had been on duty with HMS Cornwall, a frigate serving as the command platform for a joint naval anti-piracy task force.

Dubai Traffic Police said the accident happened at 1am on Sheikh Zayed Road, close to Mazaya Centre. "The man was hit by a taxi as he was crossing the road and died at the scene," said an official who declined to be named. Dubai authorities have sought to improve road safety in recent years by eliminating "black spots" and adding pedestrian bridges, speed control radar systems and more signs, among other measures.
