DUBAI // An Ajman company is looking for funding to allow it to make a world record-breaking national flag measuring 500,000-square metres to unveil on National Day.

Around the World Clocks and Gifts makes flags for hotels and government departments.

But, said the company's owner, Najmuddeen Meera Hussain, to make the gigantic flag Dh11.75million would have to be raised to fund it.

"We decided last year that we wanted to make the world's largest flag," he said. "It's our own programme, and we are looking for a sponsor."

He said that although financing is not yet fully secured, he expected it to be ready in about two weeks.

Mr Hussain said it would take about 30 days to make the flag, with 20 people working on the stitching every day. But with just more than five weeks before UAE National Day, on December 2, time is running out.

"The preliminary stitching will be done in Ajman, but the final stitching will be done at the site," said Mr Hussain.

The Sharjah government announced last week it is to build a giant flagpole, at 123 metres, to commemorate National Day.

However, at 107 tonnes Mr Hussain said his flag would be too heavy to be flown.

"There's not a flagpole big enough for it," he said.

The company has been granted permission for the flag to be displayed by Ajman Municipality, but a final location has yet to be decided.

Lebanon holds the record for the largest unfurled flag at 65,000 square metres, which it unveiled in 2010.

Mr Hussain said his company has already applied for the flag to be entered as a Guinness World Record, and inspectors would come to see the official unveiling.

He said that the achievement would cement the company's reputation. "We are the leading flag maker in this country," he said. "This will only improve our profile."
