SHARJAH // A Sharjah University student was killed and her brother seriously injured when their car crashed on campus, police said yesterday. Asma Fattah, a 19-year-old first-year student from Jordan, died after her brother, Mahmoud Fattah, 21, lost control of the vehicle, police said. The car left the road and rolled twice before coming to rest on its roof. The accident happened around 11pm on Monday. Ms Fattah was pronounced dead at the scene.

Mr Fattah, a law student at the same university as his sister, suffered serious injuries. He is being treated at Kuwait Hospital. Ibrahim al Awadh, 22, a third-year arts student from Iraq, was among several people who went to help the siblings. "It was the most gruesome image I have seen on the campus in all my three years here. No accident has had a fatality here in three years," he said. Sameer al Shaikh, the public relations officer for Sharjah University, said the student community had joined the victim's family in mourning Ms Fattah's death.

"Our prayer is that God gives her the best place in paradise," he said. Sharjah Police yesterday launched a month-long traffic-awareness campaign aimed at local students. ykakande@thenational.ae
