An Emirati was stabbed to death and his younger brother seriously hurt in a knife fight in the coastal city of Kalba on Monday night.

The brothers were taken to hospital in ambulances after witnesses reported the fatal assault to police.

The elder brother, 25, was declared dead on arrival while the younger Emirati is believed to have stabilised in hospital overnight.

The family buried the elder son at Kalba Cemetery after Al Fajr prayers at Al Huda Mosque.

Maj Gen Saif Al Shamsi, commander-in-chief of Sharjah Police, told The National on Tuesday that the fight was the result of an "old misunderstanding".

“They are all young and unaware of the consequences of their actions."

He said investigations into the cause of the incident were under way and all involved — though he did not disclose how many — were being questioned by prosecutors.

"We are waiting for medical reports evaluating the condition of the injured man. At the moment we don’t have much details, we have to wait for investigations to be completed,” he said.
