The Emirati acoustic band Takht Al Emarat, whose instruments include the oud and the qanun, the forerunner of the European zither, performed a mixture of traditional and modern Arabian tunes and khaleej music such as chaabi to enthusiastic crowds yesterday during the 2010 Womad Festival at Charlton Park, Wiltshire, in the southwest of England. The band, which is supported by the Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage (ADACH), made their first public performance earlier this year at WOMAD Abu Dhabi 2010 on the Corniche in the capital. The band was launched by ADACH to revive Emirati traditional music and nurture talented classical musicians.
