Extraordinary rumours of a jet making an emergency plane landing on Fujairah's Corniche were brought down to earth on Monday when it was revealed that the wingless Boeing 747 was being taken away to be decommissioned.
Social media users mistook the delivery of the old passenger plane for a flight emergency after images of the 70-metre aircraft being hauled by large trucks along the busy road went viral.
The plane's fuselage was being taken from Fujairah International Airport to the emirate's seaport to be shipped to Bahrain, where it is set to become the star attraction in a new eco-friendly underwater theme park.
Fujairah airport is home to a number of abandoned planes which it is in the process of decommissioning.
The authorities warned the public against spreading false information.

Details of the underwater playground, which is expected to open by the summer, were released this week.
Dive Bahrain will cover 100,000 square metres. In addition to the sunken jet, the site will include a replica of a traditional Bahraini pearl merchant’s house, artificial coral reefs and other sculptures made from eco-friendly materials.
The site will also be a safe haven for coral reef growth and a habitat for marine life.
