Six men arrested in Sharjah on drugs charges

Police arrest men on charges of holding thousands of illegal pills.

SHARJAH // Six people have been arrested on charges of possessing highly concentrated doses of the pain killer tramadol.

Police also seized 18,931 tablets of the drug, said Col Jihad bin Sahoo, director general of Sharjah Police's anti-narcotics department.

"At first we got information that an Iranian national was in possession of these drugs and distributing them among the youths," said Col bin Sahoo. "We identified him and his whereabouts. On his arrest we found him in possession of tramadol drugs.

"He also told police he had another big amount of the same drugs in his Ajman residence."

Sharjah and Ajman police raided the home and seized about 3,900 tablets of the drug.

The fugitive also told police of three accomplices, who were all arrested.

In a separate incident, police arrested two people in possession of about 15,000 tablets of tramadol.

All six have been referred to Sharjah prosecutors.

Tramadol, developed in the late 1970s, is an addictive pain reliever.

It can cause dangerous seizures if taken in large doses.
