ABU DHABI // Two sisters who admitted using hashish and taking tramadol pills have blamed their former stepfather for providing the drugs.

But the stepfather, MS, was released on bail by the Criminal Court of First Instance yesterday, while the Emirati sisters were ordered to remain in custody.

By law, UAE nationals who turn themselves in to authorities over drug use are referred to rehabilitation facilities. The sisters, however, will stay in jail until they are assessed by a medical committee.

Chief Justice Sayed Abdul Baseer, the head of the court, said the sisters BT and FT had previously been involved in several drug cases and had been referred to rehabilitation a number of times.

Chief Justice Abdul Baseer said tests conducted on their stepfather did not show any type of drug and there was no evidence against him apart from the allegations.

The case was adjourned until March 11.
