ABU DHABI // The patron of the UAE’s Big Heart Campaign has called for urgent global action to support the countries trying to cope with millions of Syrian refugees.
Sheikha Jawaher bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, the eminent advocate for refugee children for the UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, described the situation as a “crisis for humanity” and said it was time to prove the phrase “global community” was not just empty talk.
She made the call at a meeting with Middle Eastern delegates on the sidelines of the 64th session of the Executive Committee of the High Commissioner’s Programme in Geneva, Switzerland, last week.
Sheikha Jawaher, wife of the Ruler of Sharjah, Dr Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed, made a plea for the world to ease the burden of Syria’s neighbours “The truth is that it has spilled over and escalated into a Lebanese crisis, a Jordanian crisis, a Turkish crisis,” said Sheikha Jawaher.
“These countries already had their own problems but have shown remarkable generosity.”
