ABU DHABI // Community members and dignitaries led by the Foreign Minister, Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed, gathered last night to honour the Mother of the UAE.

Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, the chairwoman of the General Women's Union and the Family Development Foundation and widow of Sheikh Zayed, was honoured for her support of women's empowerment and humanitiarian issues.

At the ceremony held under the patronage of Sheikh Abdullah, the world's largest photo album was unveiled. Containing rare and historic photographs of Sheikh Zayed, the 18-page album is 5.5 metres wide and 5.4 metres high.

Mariam Said Al Qubaisi, head of the special-needs section at the Family Development Foundation, said the photos had been collected along with the Emirates Heritage Club from sources including photographer Abdullah Al Kaabi, who accompanied Sheikh Zayed, and the Abu Dhabi Company for Onshore Oil Operations archives.

Sheikha Fatima was also honoured by the Zayed Higher Organisation for Humanitarian Care and Special Needs, who screened a documentary highlighting her charitable achievements.

Sheikh Abdullah said the ceremony was in recognition of Sheikha Fatima's leading role in supporting women, family and children's issues and in praise of her numerous initiatives and efforts in humanitarian, charitable and educational domains.

Noura Al Suwaidi, director of the General Women's Union, received an honorary plaque on behalf of Sheikha Fatima.
