The Dubai Bypass Road has been renamed Emirates Road by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai.
The change reflects its growing importance since the RTA invested Dh1.15 billion in 2007 to expand it from two lanes to six, reported state news agency Wam.
Emirates Road is "one of the most important strategic pivots within the road network of the country", according to Sheikh Mohammed's website.
As a key traffic artery, it effectively connects roads within the UAE, easing the flow of traffic and goods between Dubai and its neighbouring emirates.
The road is expected to gain greater importance as Dubai's construction boom picks up, and as urban development continues on both sides, spanning 120 km.
