Sharjah announced plans yesterday to build a fishing harbour, a yacht marina and a new 6,500-home neighbourhood.

Dr Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed, Ruler of Sharjah, said the new neighbourhood would be in Al Zubair. The fishing harbour is to be north of the Sharjah Ladies Club, and the marina south of Sharjah Port.

Dr Sheikh Sultan made the announcement during a broadcast on Sharjah Radio and TV through a programme called the Direct Line, which allows residents to voice their concerns.

"The big fishing harbour project is a brainchild of President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan," Dr Sheikh Sultan said.

"Work will commence shortly."

There are more than 12,000 housing applications in the emirate, Dr Sheikh Sultan said.

He urged any citizen who felt neglected to call the Direct Line or the Palace's telephone.
