A marathon was organised in Sharjah on Saturday to encourage residents to practice sports as a lifestyle to improve their health.
Organised by the Sharjah Municipality and Medcare Hospital, the recreational marathon kicked off at 8:30am from Crystal Plaza Towers, covering a distance of five kilometres all the way to Al Majaz Amphitheatre in the Khalid Lake area.
"The municipality is committed to organising several sports events throughout the year to create an atmosphere of joy for its employees away from office work monotony," said Thabit Al Turaifi, director general of the municipality. "Such events encourage employees to practice physical activities which help provide mental and psychological clarity, relaxation, and improve the productivity and performance of employees."
The Khalid Lake area was chosen to host the marathon because of the surrounding natural landscape, green areas and fountains, which makes it one of the most attractive places for residents and tourists.
Officials from the municipality and Medcare Hospital handed out valuable prizes and certificates to the top three winners.
