Sharjah’s fourth International Open Athletics Meeting for the disabled is being hosted by Al Thiqa Club next week.

The event is being organised by the Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority (SCTDA) on Thursday and Friday.

Khalid Al Midfa, a spokesman for the authority, said the meeting was part of the emirate’s dedication to social and humanitarian causes.

“This is an expression of the SCTDA’s commitment to society,” Mr Al Midfa said.

“Sharjah is sparing no effort to support the physically challenged through a number of associations and clubs that help and engage people with special needs in society.”

The emirate has placed special emphasis on catering to those with special needs. Schools, universities, malls, government offices and tourism spots are equipped with amenities for the disabled.

Mr Al Midfa said Sharjah was ideal for tournaments and sporting events, including the recent Arab Women’s Sports Championships.

Every December tens of thousands of spectators arrive for the Formula 1 Powerboat World Championship, he said.

“Sharjah is a truly global destination with a year-long calendar of various festivals, events and activities that keep residents and visitors to the emirate creatively engaged all through the year,” Mr Al Midfa said.
