Firefighters in Sharjah yesterday requested help from other emirates to cope with two big fires in industrial areas.
The first fire was in Industrial Area 18. It gutted a diesel depot, said Col Mohammed Hassan bu Taweel, acting director general of Sharjah Civil Defence. The blaze lasted from 1pm to about 5pm.
Civil defence teams from Ajman, Sharjah and Dubai all helped to extinguish it. Several cars were destroyed. The second fire, in Industrial Area 17, destroyed furniture and mattress warehouses, Col bu Taweel said.
That fire started around 3pm, continuing until 5pm.
Man dies in gas canister explosion
A 55-year-old Indian expatriate died in an explosion on Friday at a flat in the Refaa district of Bur Dubai. The explosion and subsequent fire came after a gas canister exploded inside the apartment, Dubai Civil Defence said. An investigation has been launched.
Shop openings at Al Wahda Mall
Reports that Al Wahda Mall was to open 250 shops yesterday as part of its expansion were incorrect, a staff member said. "They will open on September 5. Not all of the shops will open, only some, and the others maybe opening in the third week of September," said the employee.
