Passengers faced delays at airports on Sunday caused by blowing dust from a severe sandstorm.

Among the worst affected was Emirates, with delays reported on flights to London Heathrow, Mumbai, Kiev, Melbourne, Bangkok and several other destinations.

Poor visibility caused by dust also led to Flydubai warning passengers on its Facebook page that: "The journey time to the airport may be longer due to the sand storm. We’re expecting some delays to flights but you should still aim to arrive at the airport 3 hours before the departure time of your flight."

The airline also operates out of Al Maktoum International Airport, where the departure board showed delays of up to an hour on flights to destinations that included Paris, Frankfurt and Bahrain.

Normal services were reported on both arrivals and departures at Abu Dhabi and Sharjah International Airports.
