A building security guard who used his spare key to let himself into a tenant's apartment in order to rape her mentally ill teenage daughter has been handed a life sentence.
The Pakistani worker, 21, carried out three sex attacks on the vulnerable victim, 18, while her mother was away from their apartment in Al Rafaa, Dubai.
The mother of the girl had raised concerns after finding out the security at the building had a spare key to her apartment, but he persuaded her not to change the locks.
The Iraqi mother and daughter had moved into the apartment complex last February, with the teenager falling into a depression soon after.
“She was always crying and lost her appetite,” said the mother.
In September of last year, her daughter confided in her that the guard had sexually assaulted her at the apartment while she was at work.
The mother filed a complaint with police and the man was arrested soon after.
A medical report issued last November from Rashid hospital confirmed the teen suffered from a mental illness that prevented her from knowing right from wrong.
The report recommended she undergo therapy to help her deal with the trauma resulting from her ordeal.
The accused denied charges of rape and trespassing when he first appeared before Dubai Criminal Court in January.
But he was convicted of both charges at the court on Sunday.
He was sentenced to life in prison - a maximum of 25 years - to be followed by deportation.
He has two weeks to appeal the verdict.
