The Rulers of Dubai and Ajman have pardoned more than 600 prisoners ahead of Ramadan, the state news-agency Wam has announced.
Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai, ordered the release of 587 prisoners of different nationalities from Dubai’s correctional facilities.
Essam Al Humaidan, the Attorney General of Dubai, praised the directive and said it will allow prisoners a chance to reintegrate into the community.
Public Prosecution has commenced the legal procedures to implement the directive.
The Ruler of Ajman, Sheikh Humaid bin Rashid, has ordered the release of 120 prisoners who demonstrated good conduct during their sentences.
Rulers of the Emirates traditionally pardon hundreds of prisoners for Ramadan.
More than 4,395 prisoners have been pardoned this year ahead of the Holy Month.
The President, Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed, ordered the release of 3,005 prisoners on Thursday and pledged to settle their debts.
The Sharjah Ruler, Dr Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed, also pardoned 377 inmates and Sheikh Saud bin Saqr, the Ruler of Ras Al Khaimah, pardoned 306 inmates.
In Umm Al Quwain, prisoners were released by the emirate’s Ruler, Sheikh Saud bin Rashid.
