RTA opens summer road-safety campaign

Tyre pressure should always be checked before heading off on a long journey and the car should not be overloaded.

Transport chiefs have launched a three-month summer road-safety programme of events and awareness campaigns.

The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) will hand out booklets to motorists at border crossings with Oman.

They will contain maps of the Arabian Peninsula, the Levant, Egypt and Sudan, as well as information on tests to be carried out on a car before setting off on a long journey.

"We will see to it that one booklet is delivered to each traveller," said Maitha bin Udai, chief executive of the RTA's traffic and roads agency.

"In the meantime, travellers are provided with the required travel instructions and tips through the ongoing traffic-awareness programmes delivered at summer centres, hospitals and other government departments."

This summer's programmes will also be aimed at students in libraries and at summer camps, and was timed to coincide with the Ministry of Interior's roads campaign.

Ms bin Udai also recommended drivers rest every 200 kilometres or when they feel tired.

Motorists, she said, must be alert and should keep an eye on their dashboards for any warning lights.

Tyre pressure should always be checked before heading off on a long journey and the car should not be overloaded. Children should not be in the front seat.
