A zebra crossing equipped with sensors that reads pedestrian traffic on the pavement and changes traffic lights accordingly was showcased by the Roads and Transport Authority at Gitex on Monday.

The Smart Pedestrian signal aims to ensure safe crossing for pedestrians and will be installed at selected locations across the city.

The crossing is controlled by an operating system triggered by sensors connected to a synchronised ground optical system.

“It reads pedestrians’ traffic on the pavement (before crossing) and the pedestrian path (while crossing)," said Maitha bin Adai, chief executive of the Traffic and Roads Agency.

"It automatically adjusts the remaining signal time according to that reading to ensure a safe and smooth crossing of the largest possible number of pedestrians,”

The smart crossing was first tested on Al Saada Street where it showed an improvement in operational efficiency and traffic safety, bin Adai said.

The RTA plans to expand the project to other areas of the emirate including City Walk,  Al Muraqqabat, Al Barsha and others.
