Rough seas claim three lives in Ajman

Three men drowned off Ajman Corniche Beach in stormy conditions Friday evening.

AJMAN // Three people drowned and two others were rescued off Ajman Corniche Beach on Friday after attempting to swim in rough seas.

Two Arabs and an Asian man died after getting into the water about 7pm. Police were called after the men were seen struggling.

"Two among them were rescued and carried to Sheikh Khalifa Hospital in Ajman, while the three bodies were all recovered that night and carried to the same hospital," a Civil Defence spokesman said.

The weather in Ajman and Sharjah had been stormy since Thursday afternoon. High waves flooded the area around the Corniche and barriers were broken.

A police marine patrol vehicle closed all roads entering the Corniche parking area. On Friday the patrol team let beachgoers use part of the shore for basketball and sitting, but they were warned against swimming.

"The waves had slowed a bit on Friday but it was still dangerous for someone to go swimming," the Civil Defence spokesman said. "Even though our patrol vehicles were on the move along the shore, some beachgoers, especially the youths, would sneak into the water."

The Sharjah Airport weather office said today that the sea was rough. Waves reached nearly two metres and swimming and fishing were dangerous.

Calm seas are expected by tomorrow evening.
