Report card from exams is mixed

Overall pass rate of Grade 12 pupils in national curriculum schools has dropped this year.

DUBAI // The overall pass rate of Grade 12 pupils in national curriculum schools dropped this year, but education officials said individual results painted a more promising picture.

A total of 34,751 pupils following the Ministry of Education curriculum sat for their final examinations at the start of this month. Yesterday, the pupils were sent their results by e-mail and text.

The pass rate in the science stream was 84.3 per cent, while the literature stream had a pass rate of 69.6 per cent.

Last year, pupils in the science stream achieved a pass rate of 91.9 per cent, and the literature stream had a 77.7 per cent pass rate.

Ahmed Saeed Al Drei, the head of the examinations department at the education ministry, said many pupils had achieved high marks and noted that the results of those at adult education centres had improved.

At adult education centres, female students in science achieved a pass rate of 66.7 per cent and male pupils got 50 per cent. In the literature stream, the pass rate for girls was 53.7 per cent and 23.8 for boys.

"The ministry is preparing a detailed report on the results of examinations to determine the performance indicators and aspects that need to improve," said Humaid Mohammed Obaid Al Qattami, the education minister.
