Emiratis and UAE residents will be able to renew their Emirates ID cards using their smartphone by the end of the year, according to the head of the Emirates ID Authority (Eida).
The aim of the new system is to ease the renewal process for customers and keep pace with the country's efforts to shift to "smart government", Mr Al Khouri, director general or Eida, told The National's Arabic language sister paper, Al Ittihad, on Monday.
The new option, which is free of charge, will be part of "a package of integrated and innovative smartphone services" due to be launched later this year.
