Red Crescent to up aid for UAE's needy

The UAE Red Crescent will increase its budget to the needy in the Emirates this year.

ABU DHABI // Red Crescent aid in the emirates will increase this year, said the charity's secretary general.

Dr Mohammed Al Falahi said the budget increased from Dh145 million to Dh213m to serve the needy.

Since the agency's establishment 30 years ago, Dh2 billion had been spent locally. Beneficiaries include people with special needs, needy families, orphans and widows.

Dr Al Falahi said that, while it may seem the agency concentrated on the outside world, it was only because most donations were designated for out-of-country projects.

The bigger budget showed that Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed, head of the Red Crescent, wanted to extend care in the country, he said.
