Almost a million meals will be served in the UAE during Ramadan as part of a humanitarian initiative.

The Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan Foundation is joining forces with more than 300 Emirati families, as well as employees from Emirates Post and Emirates Transport to prepare 951,000 meals for the Ramadan Iftar Project.

Mohammed Haji Al Khouri, the foundation’s director general, said 31,700 meals will be distributed each day across 102 locations.

Mr Al Khourithanked President Sheikh Khalifa, Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, and Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Presidential Affairs and chairman of the Foundation, for their support.

The foundation was set up by Sheikh Khalifa in 2007 to deliver a range of welfare initiatives at home and abroad.

A project promoting safety in the kitchen is also being rolled out again this year during the Holy Month.

Abu Dhabi Civil Defence will organise awareness lectures, training and distribute fire extinguishers for families preparing meals.

"We are participating ,for the fourth consecutive year, in the project, and we are training housewives in first aid, whether in cases of fires or injuries, and we are performing house visits to teach them how to avoid fires and injuries,” said captain Mohammed Al Ansary, director of emergency and general safety at Abu Dhabi Civil Defence.

The project, which is being supported by Abu Dhabi Securities Exchange, also includes training for families about the foundation’s food safety standards.
