ABU DHABI // Qatar's ambassador was honoured by Italy today with the highest ciivilian order for foreigners.

The Dean of Diplomatic Corps in the UAE, Qatari Ambassador Abdullah Mohammed Al Othman, was awarded the Order of the Star of Italy on Sunday by Italian Ambassador to the UAE Giorgio Starace.

Mr Al Othman, who is the longest serving ambassador to the UAE and subsequent Dean of the Diplomatic Corps, was given a Knight Commander - the highest civilian order for a non-Italian.

"Ambassador Al Othman has been a long time friend of Italy and has helped us across the region and opening doors through his personal contacts," Mr Starace told The National.

He added that the ambassador is a "great admirer of Italy and it's culture" and "a man of great generosity and humanity".

Mr Al Othman said this is a clear sign of trust between Italy and Qatar.

"I would like to thank the ambassador and the Italian government for awarding me the star, I consider this a shining star for the road of cooperation for the Italian and Qatari governments," he said.
