An initiative to change social attitudes about women through dialogue with young adults will begin in January, the General Women's Union has announced.
The Arab Youth Dialogue programme will target Arab men and women between 20 and 25, with a focus on UAE nationals. Officials said the project will work to educate young adults about women's issues and help nurture positive perceptions about women in society.
The programme was the result of a recommendation that was made at the Organisation of Arab Women conference held in Tunisia last October.
The project, which was proposed by Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, the chairwoman of the General Women's Union, will establish a permanent committee for Arab youth that will work towards involving younger generations in the development of their countries.
Ahlam al Lamki, the deputy manager for social activities and manager of studies and research at the General Women's Union, said that what differentiates this programme from others is that it is also approaching men.
"These men are going to be future husbands and fathers, and it's important that we educate them about how women should be treated and respected," she said.
Ms al Lamki added that the initiative will have two goals that will work in parallel - in addition to discussing critical topics that concern women, such as their treatment in the household and their rights to education and careers, the programme will also work as a sounding board for young Arabs.
"The programme will ensure that young adults have a place to voice their needs, concerns and views," she said. "It will help ensure that we have a knowledgeable generation who are capable of making wise decisions for themselves and for their families."
