Prince of Poets is region's top variety show

The Prince of Poets, in which contestants recite classic Arabic poetry in the hope of winning Dh1 million, was named the Gulf's best variety show.

ABU DHABI // The Prince of Poets, in which contestants recite classic Arabic poetry in the hope of winning Dh1 million (US$270,000), was named the Gulf's best variety show yesterday. The show, a production of Abu Dhabi Media Company, which owns The National, was among six UAE winners at the 11th Gulf Festival for Radio and Television Production, the state news agency, WAM, reported.

The festival in Bahrain, which started on Tuesday and finished yesterday, awarded five gold medals and a silver to UAE shows. The Prince of Poets, which is shown on Abu Dhabi TV, took the gold medal in the variety section. Duroob al-Khataya, also shown on Abu Dhabi TV, won gold in the Historical Drama category. The March of a Nation, a production of Abu Dhabi Broadcasting Network, won the documentary category. The show is based on the "life and message" of Sheikh Zayed, the country's founder.

Two Dubai TV productions picked up gold medals - The Index in the economic programmes category and Shadow of Words in the talk show category. The silver medal in the comedy category went to Hanna w Ranna, also shown on Dubai TV. More than 313 productions were featured in this year's festival. Saqr Ghobash, the Minister of Labour and chairman of the National Media Council, led a UAE delegation to the festival from Abu Dhabi Media Company, Dubai Media Incorporated and the Sharjah Media Foundation.
